About the materials used in manufacture.
In the past the term cane furniture was often used to describe chairs in which a mesh of
split canes was stretched over parts of a hardwood framework, principally on the backs and
seats. It was originally imported from India by the East India Company, and cane furniture
was fashionable in England toward the end of the 17th century. Some reproduction items in
this style are still sold, but usually using prewoven sheets of the cane splits rather than
weaving them in the traditional way.
Rattan is the most common type of material that is used for what is sold as cane furniture
in the UK nowadays. Bamboo, which is entirely different, is also used,
but this is usually a lot thicker than rattan and because it is difficult to bend, the shapes
and designs available in bamboo cane furniture are restricted.
The word wicker, although often used as an alternative name for rattan, is in fact derived
from the old English word for willow which was traditionally woven into 'wickerware' in
European countries long before rattan was imported here. So wicker really only means
the woven style. Nowadays most wicker furniture is made with rattan poles,
the weaving being usually thin rounded pieces of rattan core, but can be other tropical canes
such as arorog or pulet.
Also more recently various other materials are being used for the wicker work (water hyacinth,
banana leaf, seagrass etc.), but the products are still frequently referred to under the
umbrella name of cane furniture.
